Your first service
The workshop manual will tell you that the B was scheduled for services every 3000 miles starting with the basic service like checking carb oil, greasing suspension etc., checking master cylinders and basically going around the car and checking/testing everything. The next service at 6000 miles is all of this first service again with engine oil and filter, air filters, rocker clearances, check wheel alignment, check gearbox level etc. and so on.
My personal preference for "service intervals" is to do a lot of smaller stuff regularly as part of your ownership experience. I change my engine oil and filter twice a year, regardless of miles. I put new oil and a filter on every April and October and do most of the 6000-mile service items at these times. This gives me my summer and winter services. I currently use Penrite HPR30 oil in my engine and use the Ryco Z38 oil filter. Any decent 20W-50 oil is fine and don't get too caught up in sales talk. You do want something with a higher ZDDP (zinc) level for our engines that have flat tappets, but I'll explain that in another section. I drive my B at least once a week and on average cover about 800 miles a month but it's not particularly distance that determines my service intervals. Our B series engines are open to atmosphere which increases contamination with things like water quickly. Driving less and shorter trips exacerbates this issue, and our oil never gets up to operating temperature (more on that soon) to help mitigate this so I change oil every 6 months regardless of distance travelled, but it's rarely over 6000 miles in that time.
Once you get into this routine and hopefully enjoy the whole process you will come to realise that the B is not only very simple and cheap to keep on the road, but an immensely reliable daily driver.
